My initial idea from what I saw from Mark's camera was how delicate and fragile everything looked. He had 2 very thin champagne glasses filled with water. Since I am a very clumsy person the thin glasses really stuck with me. In my 26 years of breaking stuff experience, I learned to memorize the fragile things around me and keep them in my as I move around.
Another thing that caught my attention was that he lived with his girlfriend in a tiny studio that was designed for only one student. This made me think about how they move around and how they interact with one another. I wanted to look further in the compatibility of two people and the space itself.
The relationship between people's situationships and the place itself reminded me of Where is My Friend's House? by Abbas Kiarostami.
I remember the anxiety inducing thriller effect of this movie and how the feeling of being lost is treated in such a way that the audience is sucked into desperation as the plot continues.
My very short research about the construction of the stairs were conclusive but unhelpful as I found an actual stairwell sculpture located in Carnisselande, Rotterdam(10 minutes away from my place) called Elastic Perspective.
For the final design I decided to lasercut pieces that can come together easily and wing it when it comes to assembly of the objects inside.
This was not the case for the stairs obviously, So I printed out 4 circles that can form twirling stairs.
I wanted to use a transparent and fragile material to refer to the glasses and the delicacy of the situation. The material being as sensitive and see-through as the relationship dynamic and the fragility of the common space was interesting to me.
Exploring and thinking about the occupancy of a small space by more than one person made me think of mobius strips and how the residents of a space can share a plane as efficiently as possible.
I think this idea came from my intense fear of commitment and the thoight of sharing and being together romantically and physically in such a small environment really made me sail away to a design that allows distance within a constricted space.
Integrating the mobius strip idea to a maquette was kind of a puzzle situation. I researched a tiny bit about Escher's drawings but I found that unhelpful and restrictive.
The image I had in mind resembled a more conjoined and enjoyed environment like the apartment from Jacquest Tati's Mon Oncle.
Mon Oncle, Directed by Jacques Tati, 1958.
Relativity, M. C. Escher, Lithograph Print, 1953.

Very bad pictures I took of the maquette... I will fix it.
